Atlanta Falcon’s Dontari Poe Invests in Poe Man’s Challenge Winner Sutro

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 6 Jul, 2017 – Sutro, a company that monitors the chemistry of pools and delivers chemicals when needed, announced the addition of a high-profile angel investor: Dontari Poe, defensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons. Sutro received the investment as part of winning Poe Man’s Challenge in San Francisco. This is Poe’s third startup investment under the representation of Omar Sillah of Spectra Management Advisors.

“Sutro did a great pitch at the SF Poe Man’s Challenge. Their clean water technology can be used for a lot of things.” Dontari Poe said. “Water quality is so important not just in the US but globally. Sutro is going to make water safe to drink and play in.”

The Poe Man’s Challenge is a startup pitch competition that partners youth with entrepreneurs so they can be “founders for a day.” Poe was raised in Memphis, Tennessee by a single mother and saw first hand how having opportunities was the way to ensure success. After being drafted in the first round into the NFL in 2012, he started the Poe Man’s Dream Foundation to give underserved middle and high school students opportunities and resources to succeed. Part of the foundation involves introducing high school students to the tech industry, via the Poe Man’s Challenge program, which led Poe to begin investing in tech companies.

“We’re delighted to have Dontari become a part of the Sutro team,” said Ravi Kurani, Chief Executive Officer of Sutro. “Winning the San Francisco Poe Man’s Challenge was such a thrill. I believe Dontari will be a significant addition to the Sutro team, considering the fact that he is an awe-inspiring celebrity and has great influence within the NFL. We have truly interesting things in store, not just for swimming pools, but also for much broader applications within the water industry, such as agriculture, aquaculture, and drinking water. Dontari and Sutro have a shared vision of helping solve the larger problem of dirty drinking water around the globe.”

Sutro’s first application is to remove a major hassle to owning a pool.   Pool owners have to constantly check and adjust the levels of chemicals in their pool. Failure to routinely check pool chemistry could end up with a ruined pool lining, water that has a nasty chlorine smell, or worse, health problems such as burning eyes or sickness.

Thanks to Sutro’s internet-connected device, this process becomes much easier. The device measures the chemical content of the pool and allows the owner to monitor the results through an app on a smartphone. Additionally, they have a weekly subscription service that assesses the data and delivers the precise mix of chemicals needed.
